I Know this is a frequent question, Blower Motor 200 1985

Well today my blower died. I was driving and i noticed it wasn't moving much air and I played with the switch which made it quit totally. So now I need to know how to fix it. I have read the easier method that cuts off supply to the passenger side and do not want to do that. I want to replace it (not that that way is bad but) correctly. I don't have a Bentley and my dad said to try you guys before I run out and buy one. Can someone either post a link or the messageof how to replace the blower and hopefully some pictures to help. Also, what is the best source to buy the blower and switch (cheap and good parts)? FCP Groton? Thanks

    3 options:

    1) Do it "by the book"

    Con:
    not hard but VERY tedious work
    many nicks and scrathes on you rhands when done
    blower duct clips fly at a great rate and dissapear
    Blower fan blade clips fly at a great rate and dissapear
    take a day off from work (or an entire weekend)
    Your back will hurt for days even if you remove the seat and put the car up on a lift

    Pro:
    Wonderful sense of accomplishment.
    Respect and admiration from fellow 240 owners
    Save anywhere $350 to $600
    You cannot call yourself a _true_ Volvo enthusiast if you have never done one


    2) Dremel Tool method.

    Con:
    Plastic bits amd dust blows out of the vents for few days
    It's not "the right way".

    Pro: Nobody will ever see it unless they are going back in after it again, and when they do find it, they will dance a jig!

    3) PAY to have it done.

    Con:
    $350 to $600 depending on where you go.

    Pro:
    Somone else is doing it!!!!!
    1 year warranty on parts, 90 days on labor.
    (You don't want to do this job a third time, ever!!!!-)

    a labor intensive job-believe it-no easy way-at least with the 700 series they got some smarts and made it much easier. If you gonna do it-get a new Volvo blower--too much labor to not to. Good luck.

    My only comment is to recomend that you buy the Bentley manual whether or not you will use it for this particular repair. It is a valuable tool whether you use it to help you repair a problem, or just to diagnose one so that you don't overspend at a repair shop.

    I was just about to post the same question. However, I'd like to know more about this "easier way that cuts off supply to the pass side" Where did you read about it? There are cheap blowers on Ebay. I have no idea if they are good parts or not but a blower motor is less than $40 and a whole kit with switch and resistor is under $60.

    Anyone who can post info about the blower removal would be helping two of us out. I searched the archives for a while but didn't find much.

      I took the long route (the correct way) and bought a replacement motor/switch from IPD. Adequate instructions come with it and they will talk with you if you don't find them clear.

      Took me 10 hours the first time (I replaced the heater control valve and some bulbs at the same time).

      Now that my daughter has totaled THAT 240, I now have another with a bad fan motor. I was able to snag the motor from the old car and will use it in this new endeavor. I suspect I can whip this one out in 8 hours or less.

      I believe the other approach is called the Chainsaw method. Someone may be able to refer you to the info on it. I could never find it in the archives.

      I would NOT buy used or cheap fan motors. Refer to the comment above about 10 hours. I have better things to do than replace a fan motor every couple of years.

        It does take a while because you are leaning into the car. Good tools, patience, and a summer day are a must.

        It will be worth it when you turn that motor on!!!

          I'm sure you'll see it recommended somewhere but, if you are going to be working under the dash for any length of time, take out both front seats. Disconnect the seat heater power under the back of the seat, take out 4 bolts, and the seat lifts right out. Easy to do
