'88 740T stereo install question 700 1988

Before I purchase the recommended Metra Harness : #70-1119 I wanted to ask any users of this product a question.

What happens to the stock amplifier when the harness is used? Is the amp automatically bypassed or must I do some work in order to disconnect the amp.

From what i understand, the speaker wires are plugged into the amp. So, must I remove the speaker wire from the amp and connect them directly to the stereo?

Apprantely installdr.com had pdf's of "how to install" for the 740. Now they are offline. If anyone has a copy or knows another site with a copy of the pdf please msg me:(josephdesantis@hotmail.com)

If any of my comments sound ridiculouse, please msg me to clarify. I am a beginner with little knowledge.

Thanks for the help.

Joe.

The amp comes off with the stock unit. The harness kit (87) I got did not do the rear seakers. I found that there are two connectors (one is for rear setup), I used male end (cut off) from the amp and connected it to the radio.

on my 89 740, the amp powers all 4 speakers, is this just an 89 and up thing?? I found the correct harness (that powers the radio and all speakers) by flipping through the metra catalog, it wasn't listed for my car but worked perfectly...

thanks haroon. That makes things a little clearer.

Can you just clarify what you mean by "the amp comes off with the stock unit"

Are you meaning to say that the amp and stock deck are 1 piece?

Thanks.

No...I'm sure he meant to say the amp is removed when you remove the head unit...they are indeed separate pieces with the amp underneath the steering column. There are wires from the amp to the speakers and a power to the amp that goes to the head unit. The antenna and memory wires go to the head unit.

I'll email you the old Drinstall.com .pdf file.

I wasn't clear on this, is the head unit you're installing a volvo deck or aftermarket? If it is aftermarket, you'll have to bypass the stock amps with new speaker wire, and crimp the constant and accessory "hot" and ground to the wire's on the back of the deck.

I'm installing an aftermarket. What do you mean by the accessory "hot". Do you mean the amp? The amp wire is the one with the pin connector, right?
