fuel pump check valve question - revisited 700 1990

okay, someone mentioned that my Volvo might not even have one as I'm using the Regina fuel system which has only 1 pump located in the tank? if i DO have one, where is it located?

in any case, i will be calling Volvo tomorrow to see if they would know the answer to this question or not.

but in the meantime, i will be purchasing an in-line fuel pressure gauge.

now, my question is, if i have the in-line fuel pressure gauge, this will most likely be able to tell me if my long cranking (after the car has been sitting around for one day) is due to a faulty check valve or perhaps a broken FPR.

am i correct in assuming that getting a fuel pressure gauge will probably answer a lot of my questions?

If you connect the guage up at the fuel injector rail and detect pressure the instant you turn the key, it doesn't mean everything is fine and dandy. You must keep in mind the guage will sense air pressure as well as fuel pressure, so you may still have fuel leak-back allowing an air pocket to develop in the plumbing.

Bill's suggestion of monitoring the leak-down AFTER the engine is shut off is going to tell you more.

Regina cars have a check valve but it is integral to the pump and not servicable. Fuel guage will tell you if and when pressure comes up enough to start the car. Common faults are leaks between fuel sender and pump, and bad fuel pressure regulators, as well as relay problems. Once you get the pressure guage installed, run the engine for a minute then shut it off. Pressure should drop slightly but hold for at least 20 minutes. If pressure drops rapidly, bad check valve, leak at pump to sender joint, or bad regulator.

Before ordering the gauge make sure that you will be able to use it as purchased. You may not be able to splice it into the Volvo system without purchasing additional fittings. One way around this is to get the fitting off of the fuel rail in a pick and pull. You then can splice in just about any type of pressure gauge that will handle petroleum products and the pressure in the system. You can make up a very handy device with an oil pressure gauge, fuel rail fitting plus some hose, a 5/16 compression fitting, and a 5/16 barb fitting.
