exhaust manifolds, simple question 200 1978

im heading up to the yards tomorrow and i was wondering which exhaust manifolds (plus manifold-to-cat pipe) will fit on my '78 245? i know the exhaust system is pretty much universal on the 240s, i just want to be certain before i take the time to get them off.

exhaust manifolds, simple question 200 1978

Cats in 1979 were larger, get one. The cat in the 1983 and on is one piece with the downpipe, and I don't know if it'll work for you. It might, but make a deal to return it if you have to.

Oh, B sure to get new gaskets, too. And use anti-sieze on the bolts. I found the bolts were 1/2 half inch rather than 13mm. See which fits best.

Good Luck,

Bob

... Those nuts may well have been 13mm to start with. When I parted out a 240 recently I found I had to use a combination of 13mm, 1/2" and 12mm sockets to get a good grip on the exhaust manifold nuts without rounding them off -- on closer inspection I found that the differences were solely due to corrosion having reduced the size of the nut.

exhaust manifold nuts were 200 1978

not the ones I was referring to. My reference was not very clear, I know. It was the nuts that hold the cat to the adjoining exhaust component.

However, you're likely right about the manifold nuts. Seems to me that, given the post from George D., if one must remove the exhaust manifold it would be a good idea to go back with stainless nuts. (Doesn't that sound macho?) My nearby ACE Hardware probably has such.

Good Luck,

Bob

Do you suppose it was in an unusually aggressive atmosphere or
lots of stop/go driving? I've never seen anything like that on
a B16, B18, B20 or B30. The original manifold to headpipe nuts
on the oldtimers were stainless so if you don't lose them (distinct
possiblility) they are good for the long haul.
