rpm surging at idle 1800 1973

the RPMs at idle surge from about 800 to 1600.any ideas

I'm with the vaccuum leak idea. I had a 142e that did the exact same thing.. But the behavior would change depending on whether my foot was pressing teh brake or not... I never did fix it (destined to be a parts car), but I simply assumed that I had a bad brake booster.

Check and see if it changes with application of the brakes....

More than likely this a faulty Auxilliary Air Valve.

Its still fuel injected, right?

First of all, double check the timing and set the valves. You don't want to fuss with the FI system to work around other problems.

Then check for vacuum leaks - although these usually just lead to a continuously fast idle you can't adjust down with the idle valve. A long rubber hose can work well as a stethoscope.

Failing finding a leak, do some basic trouble shooting on the FI system:
