'Control Head' for A/C in 940 turbowagon 900 1993

I was just told I need a Contol Head in my '93 940 turbowagon. My mechanic said it'll be $600.00 from the dealer. Any thoughts?

If this is a Manual Climate Control, then call John at 1-800-303-6544. This is a new and used volvo parts place. I think he has new ones for $250.00.The ones he is selling is the new version that were installed on the 94 and 95 volvo 900's . It has the snowflake on the a/c button, instead of the "a/c off " It is my understanding from volvo, the solder problems were eliminated with the newer version. I would like to know if resoldering is a long term solution. Anyone with any experience?

Ours is "new" ie '94 with the snowflake, and it had a bad solder joint. Same old story, five minutes once it was out of the dash, and cool air for free.

Are you talking about the control panel for the a/c? If so, you may be able to repair rather than replace. Read the FAQ or do a search for extensive info. on this topic. Also, if you do need a new one, I've seen them on sale from folks here for a lot less than that. Or maybe try a junkyard.

I have a hard time believing that you really need a new one on a 93. Probably just needs to be resoldered.

Probably just needs a solder job - I did one on mine ('93 turbo). Took 5 minutes once the thing was out. Of course, I discovered this after I'd bought the junkyard unit for $200! Yes, the new ones do cost $600 (my crook mechanic originally told me $800!) so a junkyard part is the way to go. They're generally very reliable - only the weak solder joint is the Achilles heel of these units.

If the solder job doesn't work on yours, I'll sell you my extra one for $100. Been trying to get rid of it for a year, since it's living proof of my folly before finding the FAQ and all the great folks at the Brickboard.

good luck!

-Ben
