Stalls (not the kind in a barn) 700

My 1989 740t stalls upon startup just at the time it is placed in Reverse or Drive. Typically, I'll have to restart it and then it goes into gear without stalling and is fine. I've cleaned the TB and just put a new cap and rotor in. Any suggestions? I'm thinking it may be a failing fuel pump? Thanks for any help.

I had this problem a while back. All i did was remove my throttle and clean the thing out like mad with carb cleaner. I then blew it dry with a can of compressed air. Then i went to Wal-Mart and threw in 2 bottles of fuel injector cleaner.
The problem has yet to come back. However, i still have a unsteady idle. No idea about that one though.

It's the IAC. I had the same problem and did what you did. Replace the IAC and all is happy. Its just tough to put down $200 for a part. But its an important part. If you don't mind the unsettle idle, then save your money until it dies. Just my 2 cents worth.

Gregg,

My problem was not stalling but uneven idle. Replaced the IAC and the car runs great. The part is not cheap. I paid $220 and thats with my VCOA discount. Replacing it is easy. Just once your finshed, disconnect your battery for about 5 minutes to clear any codes. Good Luck.

oh one other thing... I have the Regina FI system. The IAC cost more if you have that type of FI. If its Bosch, then your looking at $160. I only buy new so if maybe a little cheaper if you buy used.

It may be the idle air control motor. I had same problem. Replacing it solved the stalling on start up problem. Check maintenance FAQ on Swedishbricks for info on troubleshooting

I have this exact problem occassionally. The idle always dips right on startup but it comes right back up. Sometimes when I shift into gear, it dies. It has only happened a handful of times but I would like to solve it. Please post back with your solution.

Hi Guys -

I have this same problem and it keeps getting worse and worse. First it just stalls at idle. Then, when you put it in gear, then when you take the foot off the gas any ond time - but only when the engine is hot, not when it is cold.

I have replaced the pressure regulator, the ignition coil, plugs, wires, the in-tank fuel pump. Haven't replaced the fuel filter in a while so maybe that's the next obvious thing...

And when I checked the IAC, it would buzz and humm when the engine was running, so I never suspected that part.

Perhaps someone can comment on whether this part fails, while still appearing to work?
