Rear Bumper ShockI

I have a rear bumper shock on my '92 940 turbo wagon which is partially collapsed (about 1.5"). This gives the bumper an uneven appearance. I've tried to pull it out by hooking the bumper to a tree w/a chain and giving the car some gas. This didn't budge the shock at all. Is it possible to pull the shock out or must I replace it? Even a used one is about $45-$60. Is it difficult to replace?

Rear Bumper ShockI

My wife was involved an an accident last week and in the action, the front bumper shock on the drivers side was pulled out --- like out by about one foot, completely separated from the car. The passenger side bumper shock was bent to the right quite a bit. I hooked a come-a-long to the passenger side bumper shock and pulled until the car was sliding and the shock did not come out of the housing. I reckon it was because it was bent. ??? On the drivers side I just slid the bumper section of the shock back into the housing after removing the housing from the chassis. It still sticks out about one half inch too long, but I'm gonna put it into the press and see what happens. Kinda dicey since the caution sign says --- "watch out these are Pressurised".

In looking down the hole on the chassis part, it looks like the part that is bolted to the bumper slides into the chassis part and the shock effect is caused by the movement of the bumper part into the housing of the chassis part. There is kind of a piston "thingy" in the chassis housing that must push into the bumper section for the "shock affect".

They are very easy to replace. Three bolts, two 13 mm on the front and one 22mm accessible from the top after the hood is raised.

I'm talking about a 245, but surely the 700 and 900 are the same
