Ball Joints... Easy?? 200 1986

Everyone,
My LHS front has a distinct clunk when I test it (hand on top and bottom of wheel and try to rock it) RHS front not so bad. I want to fix this before I get new tires and wheel alignment (front tires are wearing unevenly) Question is should I do both ball joints? I have read the 700FAQ proceedure, is this hard to do?
I also noticed bush on one side of the sway bar(where it connects to the chassis rail) looks like it has sqashed out of the holder.. can I just undo the bolts and push it back?

Thanks
Karl

Hi Karl

Also check it inner joints the ones in the ends of the rack. The only problem with ordering from FCPgroton.com is the the lazy Aussie $ you will be paying twice as much as if you bought in OZ. Join the OzHotVolvos Messageboard at
//groups.yahoo.com/group/OzHotVolvos/ there you will be steered in the right direction on where to buy parts in Oz.

Double check that it's not your tie rod that's doing the clunking......they'll also cause uneven tire wear.....if it is then you'll probably want to do ball joints too, as long as you're down there......sway bar bushing...sounds like it might be ripped..easy enough and cheap......i'll be calling fcp tomorrow, i'll ask about international orders....j.

Karl,

Replacing the balls joints on a 200 is a piece of cake. You'll need a torque wrench ... and I would recomend getting a Bentley manual. A big help in this and countless other repairs. I'd replace both left and right as well as the tie rod ends fcpgroton.com has ball joints for $15 each ... tie rod ends for eight bucks. You might also consider replacing the anchor bushing (large rear bushing) on the control arms while your at it. None of these repairs are terribly difficult or expensive. Good luck.

Thanks
I have bentley manual. My only problem is that I do not have a parts source like fcpgroton here in Australia. I wonder if they will mail internationally if I make up a decent sized order?...not likely... I am sure we are paying to much, if I had to pay bucks for delivery of box loaded with a few items it would probably be cheaper than here.

i replaced the tie rod ends, ball joints, struts, control arm bushings (as well as all other front end bushings) in less than 8 hours on a 91 240. Saved me some big $$$$. Got all parts from FCP Groton. you will need an alignment afterwards.
