A good 940 mechanic ? 900

Looking for reliable dealer or Volvo mech in area EAST of Balt/ DC area in Delaware to help diagnose front end shudder. Complete brake job(rotors/calipers/lines) did not resolve problem. Alot of good advice on this site re suspension bushings, engine and trans mounts ( replaced strut rod bushings ) This could get expensive if I just randomly start replacing all of above bushings and mounts. NOTE: shudder is in gear shifter not brake pedal but can be felt by driver and front passenger.

You are in for a big disappointment if you think there's a mechanic anywhere who will have better ideas about this problem than the collective knowledge on this board.

How do you know the problem is front end shudder, if it's only observed through the transmission selector? You said you replaced brakes, did this include front AND rear? Rear brakes can cause shudder also. Replacing the motor and transmission mounts are also good suggestion, as worn mounts can cause excessive front-to-rear movement of the engine/trans assembly.

Matt , I'm beginning to think you are right...I'm no mechinic ( a reetired chemist) and can't believe the stupid looks I get when I pass on the suggestions from sites like this. At 74 I'm not agile enough to get under this brick. But have repeatedly questioned the Mech who did brake job about how he tightened lugs..maybe it doesn't matter on some cars but I'm led to believe it can require proper torque on Volvo wheels. I have two offers to sell the car for 7k ( it's a steal for a 94 940 turbo in view of clean cosmetic looks and 87k mi and well maintained engine.)..but I don't need the aggravation. Not sure they will want a car with the shakes!!

I understand what you mean. This site contains great advice and of course it's in your best interest to pass on suggestions and/or question the mechanics that work on your car. For $65/hour (or whatever the going rate is now) you should be able to do that without getting dirty looks.

I have met some independent shop mechs who are really considerate and knowlegable, but in my opinion they are rare and are not representative of mechanics as a whole (even dealers). I won't go as far as some others on this board who say that ALL mechanics are crooks, but that industry certainly has their share of them.
