760 Temp Gauge and my Second Mortgage 700 1990

I probably should post this "update" on the 900 board, because my 760 dash differs from the 740's. but ...

Due to my schedule constraints and my wife's inability to drive without a horn, I took my (her?) 90 760 to my trusted (really!) mechanic for a multitude of what I thought were faulty ground related problems - intermittant fuel gauge, no switch backlighting, intermittant radio and amp - AND a temp gauge that at best registered only about 1/16 inch off cold. I had checked coolant temp at 180 and the sender was good, but got no further. Their verdict was a faulty gauge, OEM at $190, and available in 2 days. So I bit the bullet, then my wallet, applied for a second mortgage and told them to proceed. For those of you who have read this far, my questions are:

Are there any aftermarket sources for this gauge, has anyone repaired one of these gems, and (since my EBay manual hasn't arrived yet) how difficult is it to attack, I mean, pull the instrument cluster on this brick? Thanks.

760 Temp Gauge and Mortgage Update 700 1990

Well, Fuel gauge works, horn works, switch illumination works -(notice I'm saving the best for last) - and yes, now the the temp gauge works. It took 3 new gauges from Volvo parts/Atlanta before one arrived with the micro-plastic pin (that stops the needle from disappearing) intact. Apparently when the engine was replaced 50K ago after severe overheating, the old temp sender was used. It had been damaged by the heat (?) and caused erratic readings and eventually shorted and fried the electronics in the gauge.

But I got the last laugh - they installed new dash lighting and the center two bulbs don't work, so they will have to pull the dash again at their expense. Ha! So, my 2nd mortgage is pending and I'm considering changing my middle name to guilable.

Let me try this again.... 700 1990

#$@*%$ cookie file. It sucks.

"Their verdict was a faulty gauge, OEM at $190...."

Yikes! Those instruments almost never fail.

"...intermittant fuel gauge...AND a temp gauge that at best registered only about 1/16 inch off cold..."

When the temp gauge and the fuel gauge misbehave together and misbehave the same way, you (your mechanic) should be suspicious of the instrument voltage regulator. Or loose nuts, gauges to PCB.

"...how difficult is it to attack, I mean, pull the instrument cluster on this brick?"

A 6' prybar, come-along, or stick of dynamite might work.....;-)

Well shoot, no respectable mechanic would replace a stinkin' voltage regulator when he could simply replace the WHOLE GAUGE. ;-)

" Or loose nuts"

Sounds like the mechanic.

Don saves the day again.....

AND, if it is the voltage................... 700 1990

Regulator, the new gauge will not solve the problem. The voltage regulator - on a 240 - is repairable. The Great Foster might reveal a method for this, like what chip to put in, etc.

Good Luck,

Bob The Other,

Beats me, guys. I've never tried this on a 740 and was drawing on my 240 knowledge. I made a crass assumption that they're engineered similarly. (Yes, I know how to make an assume out of me.)

Do I suffer from more CRIS* today than usual? Is the 740 different?
