84 Engine vs 87 Engine 200 1987

I have two 240 DL wagons one is '84 one is '87. What I planned on doing was to continue to run the '87 and rebuild the '84 engine and trans over the winter and swap them in in the spring. Is this feasible? Should I swap the engine/trans from the '84 and EFI components from the '87.

Your Thoughts,

Bill Lindsay

You have it exactly correct. Use the fuel injection system from the car you are installing the engine in.

I suspected that the Heads were somewhat different in FI, but putting the B230 head on the B23 should not be a problem. Integral versus remote PS resovior also shouldn't be an issue. AC might be with some pulley differences, but is that an issue? I shouldn't think one couldn't use the appropriate crank pulley on either crankshaft. We are keeping the 87 instrument cluster with electronic speedo from the differential pickup. A machine shop given the mechnical speedo drive can make a plug if the '84 trans is used (I've done this).

I don't see it as a problem to do at all. Even a cam driven distributer shouldn't be an issue, if only bashing the firewall a bit.

Personally, I'd want to hop it up a bit, doing the math & cc checking the heads to get to a 10:1 or 10:3 compression ratio. It's probably a 9.3 or 9.6 now. A touch of decking the block may be in order. Then I'd factor in the "H" or "VX3" camshaft. The turbo or ipd sport exhaust can be a later fitment.

I've pulled a few good autocrosses at Club events, sometimes beating 240 Turbo times. This is using my '79 245 which has a B21F overbored to B23 specs with the B21F head carriying the "H" cam. I figure I'm about at the B23E specs or 140 hp and 140 ft-lb. I've low end torque *OVER* most Volvo Turbos, but naturally lose in HP if a good Turbo driver can keep it on boost.

I've also sucessfully autocrossed the spouse's '88 740 Turbo mit M-46.

I'm really quite happy with the '79 with above power mods, preferring it over the 740T. THe sport exhaust is a tad louder though, which leads to 740 use for longer trips.

Ok, lets see if I get this, from what I have been reading the 1984 is a B23 engine and the 1987 is a B230. The FI's are not the same, 84 - LH 2.0 and the 87 is the LH 2.2. I think you can put the B23 in place of the B230 but would have to go with the 87 FI. I have an 85 with a B23 instead of the B230, someone blew the first engine and someone else replaced it with what I got. Transmissions should be the same. Correct me if I am wrong guru's.

Does your 85 with the B23 have the B23 type York a/c compressor and the 84 power steering pump and reservoir? Front pulleys don't look to swap, making it necessary to keep the B23 type belt-driven accessories, too.

Regards,

Bob

The first thing I noticed was that the power sterring pump reservior was mounted on the driver fender, so that must tell us that it is not from the pre 85's. Hope that helps.
