Car won't stay running after jump start! 700 1985

My car won't turnover by itself. It will start with a jump-but as soon as I release the gas pedal- it stops and won't start without a jump. Ad infinitum!
Is there a glaring reason that I don't see what the problem might be?

Thanks to all,

Bob Hanbury

Car won't stay running after jump start! 700 1985

This was happening to an '86 wagon I bought out of a field near some guy's house where it had dat form almost a year due to the battery draining dead all the time.

Turned out the ground wire on the bottom rear of the alternator was rotted off.

I installed a new jumper between that small post at the bottom rear (8mm nut) to a mounting nut on the alternator bracket.

Engine now keeps running and alternator charges.

Without the alternator "alternating", the engine has to rely on battery power drectly, which the poor thing can't supply.

Once I forgot to hook this ground back on and drove the fully charged battery about 48 miles before the dash lights all came on, leaving me stranded. It was 50 miles to home, so I walked the other two. All it was was this ground wire off.

You may wish to check/replace the alternator brushes once you get things figured out. About $4 a set, Drill out the old, solder in the new. Check the FAQ for procedure.

bad battery. take the battery to a shop or to a retailer (like autozone) who will do a free battery test to see if it doesn't have a cracked cell, etc. if the battery is bad it won't hold a charge and will drain itself rapidly. the extent of the damage to the battery effects how long it can sit before it will die.

You must have 12V available to the fuel and ignition systems for the engine to keep running. If the battery is completely flat and the alternator is weak it may not be putting out enough juice at idle to provide that voltage.

    Do you have a meter?
What is voltage at your battery with key on?
Does car keep running and respond to gas pedal normally if cables from donor car are left in place? If yes you most likely have a problem in the charging system which has allowed battery to discharge . Check all connection around battery, alternator and starter, charge battery. Check voltage at battery while running, it should be at least 13.5V to 14 V with no accessories.

      Hi Dave,
Checked across battery with multimeter: 8.75 without key on-8.10 with key on.
Triple A came to jump start this afternoon-he used one of those power packs, so I didn't notice too much.We repeated this process 3 more times. I gassed it up for a few minutes; when I let go, the engine would die. I suspect that he would pull off the charger as soon as it started. Tommorrow, I can get one of my pals to jump it and leave the cables on.
BTW- I had to swing the alternator out of the way to replace the ac compressor-
sooooo-the problem could stem from the reconnection.

As always, thanks for your help,

      Bob Hanbury-Boston

Yup that a pretty flat battery, not enough to run the electrics after start up from the boost. Why did it go so flat??? Check voltage tomorrow after it starts and then when cables are removed. Check the big red wire at the back of the alternator. It is connected direct to battery 12V even with key off. I usually disconnect battery when messing around that area to avoid a short to that nut.

BTW what happened to your AC? Are you converting to r134? Did compressor fail? Where did you buy a new one? I ask because my 88 740 compressor seems to be locking up. Plan to remove it tomorrow.

          Hi Dave,
Got my pal to jump the car-ran for a while and then konked out.Idle seemed erratic. I can't even get a click when I try to start it.Could it be the obvious-the battery is cooked-or voltage regulator?

          Thanks for your help,

          Bob H.

You must have a good voltage source from the battery and alternator for the engine to stay running. You may simply have a dead or bad battery that is not taking a charge and or a bad alternator. Check voltage before during and after the jump start.

I converted to r134 and the end of the summer last year; with the new freon, it
wasn't that cool; a test showed that the compressor was just too old to be efficient. With N.E fall approaching, I figured I'd wait. Flash forward to June 2002. I bought a used compressor over the net for $75. It was from a 1990 740( I know, I'm taking chance) the boneyard is at the ass end of the state-so I let my fingers do the walking to :www.olliesautoparts.com I think you can get a new one for $260 ; and from volvo around $460.
When I get this darn thing running, I'll get it charged and see what happens?

Thanks and I'll keep you posted on this continuing saga,

          Bob H. (half mechanic/half maniac)
