intermittent engine stalling, rests and starts for a few miles 200

90 240 engine die after a few miles. Engine light goes on as it quits. Will start again and run awhile and quit. Checked diagnostic on board and led to air mass meter. It doesn't seem like it would continue running so well when it does run if it were the air mass meter.

Mike,

It seems that where the codes indicate the AMM, and the engine dies after the temperature increases upon being driven for a short while, point to temperature related issues with the AMM.

What is the state of the hose that comes from the exhaust manifold to the air box? And what about the airbox thermostat? Has it failed?

Many bricksters disconnect that pre-heat hose because when the airbox thermostat fails it sends very hot air from the exhaust manifold area to the engine, passing through the Air Mass Meter on the way. The high heat can cause the AMM to fail prematurely.

You don't indicate how many miles your '90 has, but if the scenario above is correct, you may have an AMM that is failing after reaching a certain temperature. (Electronics in the AMM are temperature sensitive.)

If you haven't disconnected the pre-heat hose and performed the air box mods, you might consider it after searching the archives and FAQ for how-to's.

Hope that helps,

TomD

Tom,

Many thanks for the advice about disconnecting the pre-heat hose. It worked! After reset, the engine light now does not come on, and the diagnostic reads no problems.

Mike

I would say it is either the AMM or the connection to the AMM.
