Faulty Starter? 700 1986

Yesterday I came out to start my car after a luncheon out and my car would not start. I had full battery power because I had lights, power to the windows, and the radio. When I tried to start the car I was getting nothing in the way of a crank or a spark. I tried a jump to see if I could get it to click over, but to no avail. I then tried tapping on the starter to see if I could get it to turn over, but still nothing. Finally I had to have my car towed to a service shop where it proceeded to start this morning with no difficulties at all.
Has anyone experienced anything like this? Is my starter about to go bad? Could it be something besides the starter? Please help, I don't want to get stranded aymore.

    Faulty Starter? 700 1986

im experiencing the same symptoms with my 89 745. ive posted recently about a strange start-up problem where the car cranks right up, although, i have none of the auxiliary electrical gadgets like a/c, radio, power windows, lights, horn ect. turn off the car and try it again, and everything is fine. now...i start the car, and periodically i get nothing at all. jiggle the key a bit (im sure this does nothing), 2, 3, 4 tries later and the car starts right up, running fine. ive cleaned up the battery cables' contact points and replaced the ignition switch and still get the "nothing at all starts", although its been probably 10 starts ago since the last time it occured. ive tried starting the car in "N" when this happens and the car still gets nothing...then a little patience and try it agin in "D", and it starts right up. i havnt experienced the no-radio, a/c etc. on start-up since i replaced the ignition switch. misery loves company. any help would be appreciated___mark.

Pure guess: Neutral safety switch. Did it act like it would if you were trying to start it with the gear selector in the "D" position??? If so the next time it does it simply hold the key in the start position and move the gear selector through the different positions and see if at some point the starter kicks in.

good suggestion! that didn't even occur to me. once i thought my car was dead but it turned out i had left it in 1 by mistake because i was checking fuses. i felt so silly afterwards. :-)

My first check would be the battery cables. Folks had a toyota that had the same symptoms and turned out to be a corruded lead to the starter. Couldnt see it at the crimp, but a mechanic cut the insulation off couples inches up and found the corrusion.
