AT overdrive - sudden death? 200

The overdrive on my '83 245 auto seems to have gone out. My girlfriend was driving the wagon back, and she said dropped out of OD with no provocation, and now it won't engage again. She got it back here, and I drove it around the block - sure enough, no OD. Button won't do squat. I checked the fluid, and it was at the MIN level for hot, so I topped it off. Again, no OD.

Can the solenoid die a sudden death? I haven't had a chance to test anything out yet. Also, how much do the solenoids cost? They look to be very expensive for MT, but I didn't see a price for the AT solenoid.

Thanks,
Pat

my overdrive died in a way that most mechanics had not seen before.. First go through your electrical tests and make sure that the solinoid is working, i have had problems with the switch on the shift lever and also with my fourth gear switch. my o.d. died this way. the pressure releif spring in the pressure releif valve broke sending the pressure in the hydraulic clutch (od) skyrocketing . it actually bent the backer plates which apply pressure to the clutch. it also blew the o rings OUT of their housings, If all else has passed the test you may want to check the pressure releif vale to be sure that the spring has not broken.

best luck . i lose a little hair over my problems. hope yours are not as bad. john p

If anything experienced a sudden death, it's probably the overdrive relay, located behind and to the left (?) of the glovebox. Do you solder? If so, you can remove it and resolder for a free, quick fix. Search in the archives for a post by Don Foster that includes pictures of the relay circuit board pre- and post-soldering for more specific information.

Solenoids very rarely fail. The majority of problems with overdrive on both manual and automatic transmission cars are electrical in origin. Sometimes the actuating piston seals need to be replaced, but the solenoid itself is pretty robust.

(FYI: If I recall correctly, the auto trans. fluid must be checked with the engine running, transmission in neutral for an accurate reading.)

Got the relay out (assuming it's the big orange bastard tucked behind the hvac vents to the left of the glovebox, and it appears to be fine. I took the cover off, and the circuit board appears ok. I tapped it a few times to make sure the "actuator" - magnet and plate assembly - was still working, and it appears to be. Test drive = negative. Still no OD.

I haven't found Don's pics yet, but I'll keep looking. Any other ideas?

        hi Pat,
This is from Haynes Manual page 7B-5
        Over Drive Solenoid Valve (AW70/AW71)
1 The over Drive Solenoid is located on the left-hand of the trans unit
2 Raise the vehicle and support it securely
3 Unplug the electrical connector (test you have voltage, if not, check your wiring)
4 Remove the two bolts securing the valve to the trans and lift out the solenoid, retriving the two O-ring Seals

        CHECK
1 User a ohmeter connected between the valve body and the end of the electrical lead. the resistance should be 134 ohms
2 The operation of the calve can be checked by applying 12 v to the valve (POitive to the lead and nagative to the body) With voltage applied air should pass through the valve. No air should pass with voltage removed.
3 If the solenoid fails aither of these test. Replace it.

        I hope this help you.

        Edwin

Thanks, Edwin - got the Haynes, and was hoping it would be of more help :(

Turns out I had (have) two problems. Blown fuse (#11) and bad relay. Replaced the fuse, now all I have is a pretty orange light telling me that the OD is off. Banging on the side of the relay would cause the light to go off for a bit, so I resoldered some of the circuit board on the relay. Still have a nice orange light telling me that my OD is off.

Will bite the bullet and get a new relay. Hope that will take care of it.

          Thanks,
          Pat
