1989 740 Turbo wagon/ revs from 900 to 1200 during idle!? 700 1989

Greetings-

I have recently purchased my first brick, turbo at that. I love the car 1989 230FT (133k)but, it does not want to stop reving at idle. I have tried to adjust the idle but, no success longer than 3 or 4 hours. I would appreciate any advice!

Thanks-

This seems to me like a classic case of a sticky IAC (idle air control) valve. I've had this problem before. When the IAC is sticky, the small signals that usually control small adjustments to the idle speed don't work, so the computer applies a larger signal until eventually the sticky IAC breaks free, and the idle speed is adjusted TOO much, then the computer slows things down again, repeat. It's a viscious cycle.

If you just bought this car, the PVC (positive crankcase ventilation) and IAC systems need to be cleaned out anyway. The FAQ and archives have lots of details on this subject. If you can't find them, post back for more help.

Hi, I have similar problem, except the idle drops from around 900, and occasionally will buck like I hit the gas. Should I consider looikng in the same direction? It holds idle pretty well, but occasionally acts up. This is happening mostly while in gear. Thanks

That sounds like the exact problem! I have looked thru the FAQ but could not locate the info for cleaning these systems. Is this something I could do myself or take to the dealership?

      Thanks!-

If you take the car to a dealership, they will immediately want to replace the IAC for big bucks! It *might* need replacement (probably not), but cleaning and testing should be the first step before replacing.

First remove the IAC and shoot carb cleaner through it until clean fluid comes out the other side clean. Then, bench test it by applying 12 volts to the terminals (one terminal is + and one is -... it only works one way... if you reverse the terminals no damage will be done... just try again until the thing works). After it is clean and you are convinced that the thing is clean and working, put a few drops of highly-refined oil (i.e transmission fluid) on the valve and then bench-test some more to try to work the oil into the motor bearings. Re-install and see if problem persists.

I had a similar problem, it turned out to be the fuel pressure regulator valve.
