230F Oil Change Trick... 900

There has got to be a way to direct the oil into the pan when the filter is removed. I always end up with a little puddle next to it. It has so long since the dealer changed the oil that I cannot remember whether they had a splash guard they slipped in under the filter to direct the stream. Any thoughts on this? I am sure someone has a low-tech elegant solution to my problem.

I have an oil drain pan that is rectangular and will contain the drained oil. It is probably 20"x12". I first open the drain, then reposition the pan so that it also under the drip point from the filter. I can change the oil without any drips on the floor.

230F Oil Change Trick... 900 1993

Ijust tried this yesterday when I changed the oil in my 93 940 wagon. I took a piece of stiff plastic out of our trash. It was the back of one of those blister packs that are impossible to open without disemboweling yourself. I think it was a mulit-pack of swim goggles to be specific. In any event, suffice it to say stiff plastic approximately 10" long by 7" wide. I slipped it under the filter and angled down to my drain pan. It worked quite well. Just a little near the engine mount which I mopped with a paper towel. None on the floor.
I wiped the plastic off to use the next time.

That was what I was looking for. A few years back (or quite a few years back...) I remember the mechanic had an aluminum channel he put in place from under the car to direct the flow from the filter into the catch basin. When he was done he would plop it back in the basin to drain until the next person needed it.

I remember them using on my 240, but there was no 940 (yet) at the time.

I lay two or three paper towels under the filter atop the motor mount. Then when the filter is almost finger loose, I spin it like mad to get it out ASAP. Still get a drop or 10 on the floor - but it's covered with old newspapers.

BTW - I remove the heat shield for a filter change, makes that spin fast step much more successful.

Good Luck,

Bob

Well...

I still end up with the puddle on the floor. But it is a small puddle...

Even paper towel or absorbent stuff doesn't seem to help much, when put right under the filter.

Best one there was to put a plastic bag around the filter before taking it off, then spin it off, and the oil remains in the bag. To be sure, I'll be doing that on my next oil change.

There was a thread on this exact subject less than 1 week ago. Scroll down in RWD (all) to find it, there were lots of great suggestions.
