Sticky steering rack 200

When my 242Ti became a second car, I didn't drive it as much, and now the steering action is not smooth anymore. There are a few spots to the left and right where increased resistance is felt while turning lock to lock. The steering becomes smoother after I drive it awhile. I'm thinking about pushing the steering boots back and cleaning the shaft, and then lubricating it. Any suggestions on how to clean it and then what type of lubricant?
Thanks, John

Might want to check steering column U joints, They can become either loose or freeze up when worn out.

"...a few spots to the left and right where increased resistance is felt while turning lock to lock..."

This sounds more like a binding U-joint in the steering column, probably the lower U-joint at the rack. I had to replace one in my '86 some years back. In the past, I've described the feeling in the steering wheel as "cogging" as I rotate the wheel.

Others on the BB have suggested lubing the U-joint with oil. Try this -- if it helps, then you know it's the U-joint and not the rack. Replacing the U-joint is not rocket science, but it is a greasy, somewhat unpleasant chore.
