wiring harness questions, 83 turbo 200 1983

I just changed the wiring harness on my 83 245 turbo, even had to splice in two new gray connectors on the firewall side becuase they were toast as well. Since this hasn't fixed my cars pension for dieing for no apparent reason, I'm wondering what condition the wiring coming from the firewall, and running along the passenter side fender, and going to a connector near the fuel distributor, and the the lights, might be in. The plastic coating still looks in good shape. Has anyone has problems with these specific wires before? I guess I could cut of the plastic covering here and there to check out the condition of the wires. My car seems to die every five mintues now, I have put in a new fuel pump relay, fuel filter, and this doesn't help.

thanks

-Bruce

So when it's in dead mode, what gets it started?

You need to diagnose whilst dead. What have you tested?

It always either starts right back up, or it will start and instantly die, (maybe similar to the kind of start (or non-start) you will get if the ballast resisitor is disconnected?)

Since putting on the new wire harness, it idles high (about 1800) and smooth for about a minute, then idles kind of rough. I cleaned the throttle body while manifold was off.

I've checked the gounds points for the main and secondary pump, both seem good.

New intank pump was installed about a year ago (the higher performance one that came in later models)

I've looked closesly at the vaccum hoses, didn't see any holes. Though I guess somtimes the hoses will have undetectable holes in them.

Will die whether hot or cold, whether idling or under aceleration. problem started out only occuring once or twice a week. I haven't driven it since the new (actually a good used) harness was put on, as it dies with in a few minutes of idling.

Sometimes after dieing, it will go through a series of start and die, for about six attempts, and then will start.

I have cleaned the fuse box (I have a new one I will install). And fuses all look good.

I have swapped in a half dozen different used fuel pump relays, and a couple of new ones with no difference.

I haven't actually gotten under the car to look at the electrical connection to the fuel pump.

Do you have any tests you can suggest? I have the bently manual, as well as the volvo problem solver binder (that thing is hard to read!)

thanks

-Bruce

Sounds suspiciously like a bad connection at the frequency valve.

Bruce,

On the last two harnesses I've done I've also replaced portions of the harness that go through the firewall on their way to the ecu, these are usually toast as well. Did you change all of the vacuum hoses while you did the harness?

Josh

Josh, no I didn't change all of the vacuum hoses, though I did change a few. The two big hoses that go to idle speed motor look fine. I guess I will take a look at some of the other under hodd wiring that wasn't changed with the new harness.

thanks

-Bruce
