Valve Adjustment 200 1991


Volvo valve adjustment is done by replacing shims and require a special tool. I always find it difficult to open up the valve cover, measure the clearance and then having to go to the dealer to buy the shims. They charge $5.00 a piece. Is there any easier ways to do this?

    I check valve clearances when I do a timing belt change. If more than a couple are out of range, I simple measure and record all of them carefully, then I remove the camshaft - takes five minutes if the belt is already off. That allows me to replace the dampers on top of the retainers, and do the valve adjustment without any special tools. I can then polish the seal surface on the cam as well and ensure no leaks. Although Volvo advises to not reuse valve shims, I do stock used ones, and new ones. In Canada they wholesale at about $3.50 each, sell for $5.00, available new as an aftermarket part. The dealer does charge a lot more.

      Removing the camshaft is a great idea! I've never used the Volvo shim removal tool as none of my engines have had valve clearance out of spec. However, I've removed shims with a tool on a Fiat and it was no picnic. I'll try your approach next time I do a T-belt.

    You could rent the IPD shim kit that charges you for the shims used but I think it really pays if you have a few cars to do. We usually take a group approach because a car can be done in 30 minutes or so once you get things going. Another method is to build a shim collection of your own but you have to swap cams, visit junkyards and swap heads to get that started. On the other hand, you are probably going about it the right way and should not have to do it that often, right? It seems like most do it once in the 100-200K miles range.

      What are the symptoms that one needs to do a valve adjustment?

      Or is it "preventative"?

      Just wondering.

        Do not quote me, but this is what I was told by 'Volvo specialist'. Volvo (mine is B230F) valves actually get tighter over time and valve noise reduces..sounds great but can actually cause valve damage. Mine were re-shimmed and now I have slightly noisier valves now they are in spec. He told me that they worry if you can not hear them. Recomended interval is something like 40K Kms but I do not think anyone does it this often.

          The valves do sometimes get tighter in service, and become quieter. But it is also true that many get looser as the shims wear thinner. When measuring shims they can be substantially thinner than the inked size on the underside. So the best idea is to check them, at intervals no greater than the belt change.

        Value adjustment is a part of what they use to call "a tune up". It is part of the preventative maintenace. Something that use to keep cars running a max performance. Hope this answers you question.
