EGR /EXH Dummy light 200 1979

On the way home from work this evening, my EGR/EXH light came on. Can someone please forgive my ignorance and enlighten me as to what this means?

I have no experience with this in Volvos but EGR usually means Exhaust Gas Retrun/Recirculation. This is when some of the exhaust gas is bled off and returned to the intake side, helps with emmissions. I would not think this existed in such an old car. Is this a California car?

Karl

Hey Karl

Thanks for your response, I assumed it was something to do with the exhaust because of the EXH. I am not sure if this car came from California originally, but it's been here is WA for several years.

What's the typical prescription for something like this?

Thanks again!

Jay

Sorry mate but I have no idea, my 86 does not have EGR (if this is what it is) but my car is Australian model and we do not have those tight Californian laws WRT emissions until much later.
Personally I would look for a good manual for that year (sorry mine is 82-93) if you do not have one, look for a hose going from exhaust manifold to intake manifold (it may have a valve in it) look for some sort of wiring that would be setting off the light. Remember it is not the pre-heat hose going from exhaust manifold to air box.
Hope someone else can help further.
Good luck
Karl
