HID lighting upgrade 700

I was thinking about installing HID lights on my 89 740 for better lighting, I seen a conversion kit that goes directly where the sealed beams are. I included the link please look at it and tell me what you think. And another question do i put the same lights in the hi and lo beam slots. In the description it says it fits both, so are the wattages the same?

    HID lighting upgrade 700

    those aren't HID lights.

    HID = High Intensity Discharge.

A true HID system basically uses two plates inside. The light is created from electricity arching from one plate to the other, thus a discharge. In addition to that, a true HID system has auto-leveling so you don't blind the other drivers on the road.

I believe HID will suck a lot of juice through the wires as well, so if you were to actually get a real HID system, you would have to replace the harness as someone pointed out.

The thing you linked to appears to be a Xenon charged/enhanced Halogen bulb that you can find a dime a dozen.

Personally, I think the blueish/white lights look nice, but aren't very effective. Think about it. The reason why the lights are yellow are so you can see during foggy conditions. White light causes the fog to show up nicely. Yellow light doesn't. So your headlights are slightly yellow.

But hey, whatever you like. I suggest staying away from the Silvania blue/whites though because I've heard they make your light look blue, but really aren't that good for visibility at all.

http://www.piaa.com/h4bulbs.html has some nice bulbs, but they cost a lot as well.

      NON-HID lighting upgrade 700

I've upgraded my bulbs ('cause that's what we're talking about here!) to the Sylvania Cool Blue's. I coulnd't be happier. The light is brighter WHITE, not blue at all. Granted, as Kenric pointed out, they're obviously less yellow, but they certainly are NOT BLUE and do not look like the cheap-dipped-in-a-rainbow-of-different-nailpolishes-blue-green-red-purple bulbs. I dislike those (hate is a strong word...) tremendously. The bottom line is, you couldn't tell these from standard bulbs, but they sure do clear things up on a dark country road. I was soooo excited the first time I saw them, best $20.99 CDN I've spent on my car... well, almost!

I'd follow others' advice and replace the cubes or get the Cool Blue's... don't get higher output bulbs unless you upgrade the wiring harness. A higher quality bulb in the stock lights will be very obvious... the 'coloured' lights I mentionned above have to be over-powered to overcome the light lost to the coloured coating painted on the glass. And they still don't illuminate that well. They're just for looks (read: not for looking (ie. driving IMHO), since they're so dim!)

      Good luck,

Do a bit of research first. I remember someone posting something about brighter headlights and ended up melting their headlight wiring harness. It may have been on turbobricks or here. can't remember. It was within the last month or so.

      HID lighting upgrade 700

With conversion kits to run true HIDs in your car you wouldn't have to worry about frying your wires. HIDs draw about 10-15 amps when they are turned on for the first few seconds, then they go down to 1-2 amps, which is MUCH less than what a normal light bulb uses. here is a link to a set of TRUE HIDs

      http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1842837995

If you were going to be putting HIDs in your car, first buy a nice set of cibie headlight cubes from ipd, and if you aren't liking the pattern and increased visibility from those, then go for the HIDs. The cibie lights cost about 50 dollars a cube, so about 100 to upgrade your low beams. I say you would like those much more than the current headlights on your car.

But that conversion kit to my understanding isn't compatable with my car because i have the four sealed beams

I was just giving you an example of what the true HIDs were. You would have to buy the conversion for the H4 bulbs, and get a set of cibie cube headlights. IPD sells the cibie's

A/C retrofit - what to replace and how much? 200 1989

The R134 conversion is a popular topic here on the board. I highly recommend looking up old posts from May and June of this year, and pay particular attention to Chris Herbst's input. There apparently is a Volvo conversion kit which sells for about $350 US (I think) which has all the fittings, a new condenser, I beleive, and the proper oil. I'm surprised your dealer didn't mention it. That same kit was on e-Bay a few weeks ago and sold for maybe $200.
