Tailgate sticks - very hard to open 200 1992

First time poster here...great site...

The tailgate on the wagon is very difficult to open. The last two times I had to pull out the T-latch inside the car while my friend pressed the button and pulled the latch handle outside.

Lubricated the parts with a spray lubricant. Still stuck. It seems to me that pressing the button all the way just barely puts pressure on the mechanism to release the latch. Any way to change the sensitivity or action on the button?

No accidents nor dents on the tailgate.
Any tips on how to fix this problem will be greatly appreciated.

TIA, sbike

probably the guides on the inside frame of tailgate are out of alignment.
These guides and the rails on the tailgate(that insert into these guides when the gate is closed) are adjustable.
loosen them aand try closing and opening the gate several times until it opens easily

sbike,
While I have had no experience with this I would suggest you inspect the mechanism, you should be able to get to it by removing the inside trim. Before you do that check that the t-gate is sitting flush to the body, there are adjustable bumpers on the sides and I imagine the latch in the floor is also adjustable. This could cause pressure on the mechanism, give it a try.

The adjustable parts surround the latch, not on the sides this year. Try holding the button down and opening/closing the t.g. while looking through the slot at the latch. Binding is easy to spot. The outside button pushes a link/lever up and the button may be cracked and not pushing all the way. Wayne
