Hunting/surging idle 200 1983

Fellow Bricksters:
This problem just started. My 83 GL's idle surges or hunts (not sure which is the correct term) from 750 (spec idle) to around 1k RPM. Engine (B23F) runs great! I've cleaned the IAC just recently, the TB was cleaned and adjusted about a couple of months ago and I searched for, but didn't find any vacuum leak. I also switched the ECU with a known good spare. Could it be a bad AMM? Fuel system problem, maybe? BTW, I have not check any of the electrical signals to all the components I have mentioned (IAC, AMM, TPS). Not too confident on my elctrical (checking skills). Any suggestion will be appreciated.
Denny

Forget about looking for the connectors for testing - the '83 doesn't have fault codes. Checkout the constant idle motor and base mixture adjustment. Search the archives for lots of info on these topics. The AMM could also be faulty.

Funny i am helping someone with the same problem... i am new to volvos....

Where does the AMM and the idle motor live...

I found a bunch of cracked vaccum hoses and replaced them..... the vaccum slowly fluctuate between 10 and 14. It is really bad when cold. BUt is steady when accelerating.....

i replaced cap and rotor because they looked bad and wires were of various brands.... were replaced with quality spiral wires... spark plugs are a bit dark but i know that the engine is driven on short distance

this marvel has under 70,000 miles..... original

      Cheers

      Michel

I had similar problems with mine. Run the OBD and see what you get in the way af fault codes. They help tremendously in narrowing down the problem. See the FAQ700/900 for instructions. I beleive that the 200 series OBD is behind the wheel on the driver's side, and only has one set of six ports, whereas the later models have two sets of six. You still use the # 2 port and the codes will be the same.

    Good luck.

    Sam
