Good day all!
Quick question. Is a bad cat converter harmful to the engine? Where I live, there's no inspection required on vehicles, but I suspect my converter is shot. I believe it's still the original. The brick now have 180k miles. Thanks!

    If it gets clogged, you could burn your valves. Don't know about cons of a blown out or removed cat though.

    Sorry about the empty response. Fat fingers.

    Like any other engine with a catalytic converter, there is no harm to the engine if the cat is not blocked. If the cat is open, it is just a piece of pipe.

    If the cat is blocked, you should have symptoms. The most obvious would be really poor performance. No acceleration, perhaps the engine even stops.

    If the cat is partially blocked, you might get a stink from the cat, like rotten eggs, or just bad gas milage. You might also see some engine overheating.

    Mostly, since you have no inspection to worry about, I'd just make sure the cat was not blocked and drive on.
