Ele. Fan Cov, Sensor placement?? 200 1986

Gonna do a fan conversion,
poured thru archives and turbo bricks, no one really says where the best place to locate the capillary tube would be. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Brad

Best is a sensor that contacts coolant. The late Volvo sensor and the early Volvo sensor are the right temp range for a fan. There are both thread in the rad or lower rad hose switch holder and push in the rad style. If your rad takes a switch, use it after verifying it is the right temp range. If not, salvage a lower hose switch holder and install it. I think the IPD catalog used to list the switches and temp ranges. Somewhere around 190 on and 200 off is fine. Or 185 and 195. A ten degree range is about right and ideally the fan should come on about ten degrees after the engine thermo begins to open. Engine thermos take about 20 degrees to open fully and are beginning to open at the rated temp. I prefer the cold side of the rad for the switch since the reading will be after the rad has done what it can do. I have found through the fin sensors to be inconsistent since they are affected by more than the coolant temp (which they never see directly).

Thanks for the input,
would like to go that route,
cam you point me to which models may have used the lower rad hose sensor?
Thanks.

Maybe very early 740/760 like 84 or 85, and some 84 or 85 240T and possibly some later 240. I am not sure of any absolutely certain models. Best to go to a junkyard or post a BB request. Once you get it, check the part number on the switch, then use it to find the temp range at the dealer. There were some switches that are too hot. They open at around 200 and close at around 220. I would not use them for a primary fan; they were used for a secondary fan, though Volvo later substituted a cooler switch.

Mine goes through the fins of the rad. I have mine kinda high. If you have the fan coming on at, say, 170, I don't think it would matter too much. Which fan are you going with?
