I know of what you speak being mechanically challenged myself. More details would be helpful. For example, is the A/C compresor clutch engaging when you turn on the A/C. On a 91 744, the compressor is on the drivers side below the alternator. I do not know where it is on a 240.

Locate the compressor and have somebody turn on the A/C. The pulley will look like it has an attachment on the front. That is a part of the clutch mechanism that causes the air to get cold. I have no idea of the physics or dymamics of the process. I just know if that piece spins and I have freon, the air gets cold. If after the A/C has been turned on for, say 10 seconds, and clutch spins, you may be low on freon. If not it is another problem. Let's start with this first.

If you do not know what a compressor looks like, go to Volvo 240 A/C Compressor.

Please do not be insulted if this post is well below your level of knowledge. Without specifics, I went to the basics.
