temp guage 700 1990

My cooling system (fluid, thermostsat, guage) all seem to be working fine. The temp guage will go to and stay right at the center, but at this point my engine starts to make a whining noise and seems to lose some power and maybe get to hot.Could my guage be reading normal when my car is actually be running too hot?
How do I actually know the actual temp? I never get this noise in the winter or cool months or even now until it reaches "normal" center! Thanks Peter

It may be your electric fan. Its located behind your grill. Once your temp gets to a certain temp, the electric fan should kick in. If the sound, sounds like ballbearing in a tin can, water pump getting ready to go out.
