HELP! I drove thru a puddle and the car died... it won't start... Please help. 700 1987

Ok - here's the deal, my wife and I were driving to church today and she drove thru a pretty deep puddle... the car stalled and would not re-start.

I checked the air filter, it's bone-dry, there is spark ( i pulled a plug and checked for spark and got a whoosh of flame from the exhale out of the spark plug hole...

So I pulled the injector wires and floored it and it started, but would not stay running. I did that several times till it seemed like I burnt up all the fuel in the cylinders and went to put the injectors back on, but it just wouldn't run at all with the injectors on. There was the smell of raw fuel...

I pulled the injecotrs again... and it would run again... put the injectors back on and it would not run...

Ok - so it also got water in the passenger footwell from a small rust hole in the floor... so I'm thinking maybe the computer got wet and that's why it won't run??

I'm going to pull the computer out and see if it's wet inside... but does that computer run the spark or only the fuel? if it's only the fuel then that would explain why maybe it won't run...

Soooo -- let me know if you have any input for me, and/or maybe a used ECU for the car..

It's sitting at church waiting for me to fix...

It's a 1987 Volvo 740 with the AW71L tranny and it is a NA engine (no turbo)

280,000 miles! (I want to make it at least to 350,000!)

Thanks!

    GOOD NEWS!!!

I dried up the ECU for the car, plugged it in and VIOLA! the car started and ran!! :)

There was a little more piston slap on the first start, but I also noticed there was an extra quart of oil in the crankcase... fuel that is...

Anyhow, I just changed the oil with new Mobil 1 and a filter, and it runs perfect again.

Now I just need to dry out the floor and patch up that rust hole to keep the water from coming in again...

    :)

Does the car have its gravel shield/splash guard in place? What wiring is down low? Fuel pump connections near the rear?

Just guesses, I am a 240 guy. But I know it's a frustrating thing to have no clue when the @#$%# things quit.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

It does have the splash sheild under the motor...

I took the ECU out and brought it home... it did have water dripping out of it..

I took the metal cover off and am working on drying it out.

I'm thinking that's what's wrong, but I'll know more tomorrow when I try it again.

Sometimes you'll get lucky and the dry ECU will work again. It depends. You need to cover the hole in the floor. Use some silicon and a piece of aluminum. Anytime the wiring gets wet, the car will not run right. The wrong jolt and something will fry the ECU.

Fortunatley that is not a high failure year, and you should be able to find a replacement for pretty cheap.

        Good luck.

if you got that ecu wet your probly in for a whole world of crap, theres no telling what down the line might have shorted out, but if you went through a pullde big enough to get water into the passenger compartment, please tell me where this is i truly would love to go flying through it for fun, but if i was you id start looking at the O2 sensor, its down low and either near you catty or on the manifold area and its very possible you have a broken wire down there that when you hit that puddle it shorted with the car and when that happens say good bye to your o2 sensor and hellow to a very expensive new one.

        Good Luck
