1983 760 GLE Turbo Diesel,Is it worth $700 ????? 700 1983

I found a '83 GLE Turbo deisel. The body is clean,no rust, black leather interior without any cracks.Automatic trans.Seller won't come down from $700, says car is worth more. Have not taken for test drive yet, seller is getting it ready.
Is this model reliable, and what should I look or listen for when I drive it ?
Thanx,
a very cautious Michelle

I don't want to offend any diesel lovers/owners out there but I would pass on it unless I personally knew a good diesel mechanic who was willing to check it out closely and be available for maintenance/advice down the road. It is a given that they are absolute dogs in traffic- slow to gain speed for passing and merging. Their performance alone is enough to vote against one. Should you need engine repairs you would be better off to throw it away- and with only $700 invested you could probably do that....

Are you sure you're talking about the Turbo-diesel? In 1983, it was one of the fastest diesels on earth, that is in Turbo-intercooler guise. They are fairly reliable here in Holland (non-turbo very reliable) and not worth a penny over here. But then, dutchmen don't like cars of more than 10 years old. Seems like a bottom price to me, if it's well kept and doesn't have astronomical mileage.

I know these cars are not so popular in the states, but if you maintain these engines, they run forever. Firstly, always use synthetic oil and change regularily. I have no idea who much it is worth as I do not know the prices in the states but I paid 800 dollars for a 1987 745 TD in similar state and equipment level and with 180k miles, and I think that was a good price. Give it a good check out, the usual stuff and if you like it and like diesels, then why not. Just don't expect it to drive like a petrol turbo because it won't.
