240 A/C Aux Fan Switch 200 1993

OK - I'm still trying to debug my aux A/C fan not running. Jumped the switch on the lower line going to the evaporator, works fine. Now, about that switch. Called all over looking for it, FCPGROTON.com says it's a dealer item. Called Borton - they can get it - for $71.50! Don't want to spend that if I'm not positively certain that it's the culprit. John at Borton says the parts book calls it a pressue switch - I thought it was a thermo switch. Can anyone tell me what this critter truly is? Am I looking at the wrong malfunction? If it is indeed a pressure switch, how would that trigger the fan to come on? I know that if the condensor gets hot the high side pressure will build up so is this the actuating force?
TIA,
RP

Yes it is a pressure switch. I wouldn't honestly spend $7 on that piece since you can duplicate it's function by doing exactly what you already did; jump the switch.

That will effectively activate the electric fan at ALL times that the A/C switch is in the "on" position (excluding 10sec system delay at first turn-on). The rest of the time, the fan will just run with the A/C on. In the long run it will help A/C performance anyway; I don't understand why Volvo bothered with the pressure switch in the first place.

I have successfully jumped those switches in the past with no side effects other than improved A/C output.

240 A/C Aux Fan Switch 200 1993

chris,

This sounds like a good idea and one I think I'd like to implement on my '93 240. It seems that the A/C fan never runs, and I could use a bit better A/C though it's not bad now.

Where exactly is this switch?

Thanks,

TomD

I have a 92 245. I can only get the aux fan to run if I have the a/c on, with the recirc button pressed in, sitting or moving in slow traffic, on a hot day. By then it is sometimes too late to prevent the engine temperature from rising towards the red. (maybe just a flaky temperature gauge/board). At that point I turn off the a/c and stew, worrying about my power window buttons.

My understanding, from information gleaned here a few years ago, and from my observation of my fan in action, is that it is a pressure switch, and that the pressure is related to the a/c. I'm not sure exactly how the pressure switch is activated. Have you tried letting the car run with the a/c on a couple of clicks and the recirc switch pressed in?
