Electric fan convert? Throtle body cleaning? 200 1981

Hello all.. i have a couple of questions to ask.

I have my mechainical fan/shrowd out of my 240 and was planning to do the electric fan conversion. But i have read places that this might not be a good things to do (for reliablity reasons). I'm still intrested in doing it though, what's your opinion? Will i see many gains from it?

Also i've been wanting to fix bad startups (in winter espcially) It will start then die after 1 second this repeats 2-4 times in winter, it starts after the 1st try i warmer weather, what's causing this?
I've also been wanting to clean the thrtole body as many say it's a good thing to do, are there any instruction on the net how to do this? I have a parts car with a B23E motor (same as mine) so i can practice on that, or take any needed parts.
I just wanted to say thanks for all the help brickboard has given me, my car almost has it's bodykit installed, is getting a better exhaust system and swaybars. It should be a different drive when it finally leaves the garage (can't wait to get it out)!
Geoff

(1) Electric Fan Conversion - GO FOR IT!!! An electric fan quiets the engine noise, reduces stress on the water pump, allows the engine to rev a bit more freely at high RMP (highway), and possibly increases HP a fraction. It also frees up a HUGE amount of room in the engine bay! You will appreciate the extra work space when you are ready to tackle a timing belt change . . .

(2) Throttle Body Service - go to the "Volvo 700/900 FAQ", at the top of the page under the "Features" section. There is a GREAT amount of additional information.

(3) Idle Air Control Valve - also consider cleaning the IAC for preventive maintenance. The IAC and Throttle Body work hand-in-hand. When you press on the accelerator, the throttle body opens up and air is fed to the engne. When you crank up, at idle, or when coasting, the throttle body plate is closed, and air is routed through the IAC valve to the engine. Check them both!

Excellent!

I will probably convert to elec fan for sure. And i'll clean the throtle body and idle air control valve. I'll try it on my parts car first JUST to make sure i know what i'm doing. Thanks for the help/advice.
