I am replacing my exhaust manifold gasket with a new Volvo gasket. One side of the gasket has a metal surface while the other side if fibrous. Which side faces the head??

The metal side goes toward the manifold, composite material toward the head. The theory is the head is cooled the manifold is not. Also thermal expansion is greater on the manifold (moves more)so movement between metal to metal would not shorten the life of the gasket. The metal also is a barrier and reflects heat away from the composite material.

usually, one side says "out". that's the side that faces the manifold.

Sometimes, it's in Swedish. UT = OUT

yeah, but last time I got exhaust man gaskets, they weren't marked. I don't remember which way I put them on.
