Door Handle Repair 200 1983

I had posted a message a week or so back about broken and loose door handles on my 83 240. I managed to fix the handles for little $ thanks to the help of the forum and a little common sense. I wanted to say thanks for the help and to pass along what I learned.

Thanks for the information I repaired all the handles by removing the inside door pannel. Remove the screws holding the arm rest and rotate up 90° and pull off armrest (there is a slot and pin that secures the armrest). Remove small plastic panel on window crank handle and remove screw. Gently remove plastic fasteners that hold panel to door by placing large screwdriver behind fastener and rotating. Lift up panel from lip of window frame at top. Disconnect speaker wires for front panel. Unscrew two phillips head screws from door handle on inside of door. slide door handle out of hole from outside.

I replaced the pins (rivets) that join the two halves of the handles with 8-32 x3/4 flathead bolts and double nuts (to lock). I greased all the window cranks channels and slides and other moving parts with white lithium spray lub while in there and replaced the moisture shield in the door with plastic sheeting. My door panels on the drivers side front and back were wet it had rained the day before. Was easy to do but took some time (5-6 hours working slow it was hot >100) to do all doors.

Thought I would pass along what I learned for the next guy.
PS: Don't forget to re-hook up the speaker when you replace the panels.

    Door Handle Repair 200 1983

Beyond repairing the handle, don't forget to THOROUGHLY lubricate the moving 'n sliding parts inside the latch mechanism. Otherwise you'll be repairing the handle again soon.

In addition to the white lube you mention, I like to also saturate the mechanism with motor oil and then blast it with compressed air. This blows the oil into the innards of the latch mechanism. The oil will drip from the bottom edge of the door for about a week.
