Questions?? Whos got answers 1800

Thank you to those who replied to my last post...... Now How do I know if I have O.D. I have a little lever on the right side of the column and a little red light comes on when I touch it,,, Is that O.D.?? Also can anyone tell me a good place to get parts in the U.S. for reasonable prices,,,, I went to my local foriegn auto parts store and they could not even get me air filters......Next, how hard is it to put in the points eliminator that I have read about and where do I get one, for 90 bucks it sounds like a great deal. and lastly, are there any p1800 owners in southeastern massachusetts out there? Thanks in advance for your replies, I am new to the volvo scene.

Most ODs have a 4th gear switch so you may not hear the click if the
    shift is not in 4th.

You can tell best while driving in 4th at 40 or 50 mph. When you
do the switch you should feel it shift into OD and hear the engine
    slow down.

If it doesn't engage, look under the car and see if there is a football-
sized case between the transmission and the driveshaft. That is the
overdrive. It is possible that someone has replaced your M41 tranny
with an M40, which doesn't have OD and uses a longer front driveshaft.

If you are not getting Rolling mag, you need to. It has great articles
and ads from LOTS of parts suppliers.

    Questions?? Whos got answers 1800

There are many parts sources for the 1800. Start with your local Volvo dealer. Lots of things are still available and can be ordered. Foreign Autotech outside of Philadelphia has a wealth of parts, new and used, as does Don Thibault (www.p1800.com, I think)who is located in Mass. IPD on the west coast also stocks lots of 1800 stuff. Join the 1800 list on Yahoo for a wealth of resources, nicely categorized.

You have OD--but does it work. with the engine off, ignition on, flip the little lever and listen for a distinct click--that will tell you whether the solenoid is working--one of the most common failures.

JC Whitney carries most of the common electronic ignitions--Crane and Pertronix are the most commonly used. I like the Crane myself--just installed it with excellent results.

Search this board and the 1800 List--you'll find most questions have been asked and answered by knowledgable people. Get the Haynes Manual and the "green" factory service manual and you'll find that most things are easily done with time and patience.

"You have OD--but does it work. with the engine off, ignition on, flip the little lever and listen for a distinct click--that will tell you whether the solenoid is working--one of the most common failures."
Don't forget that the OD only works in 4th gear as well. When driving it in 4th gear at a decent speed (say 40+ mph) let up on the gas slightly and flip the lever. If everything is working it will slip into a '5th gear'. If it isn't, come back here for more detailed diagnostics.

      Other parts sources:
www.gcp.se - great Swedish source of OE parts - exchange rate/domestic market/etc makes for really good prices - and shipping isn't really much more than domestic shipping
www.kgtrimning.com - best source for performance modification parts for pushrod Volvo engines I have ever seen.
www.swedishclassics.com - great domestic source for parts (though I've come to suspect they just resell www.gcp.se, et al parts with a hefty markup)
www.scandcar.nl - great source for rare parts for rare Volvos.

PS - Since you are new to 1800s - a couple of warnings learned the hard way.
      1) NEVER EVER drive your car in the winter if they salt the roads where you live. 1800's have a complex body structure with lots of pockets and dead spaces which will accumulate salty road spray yet be immune to the most meticulous washings afterwards. And rusty 1800's are not economically restorable.
      2) OIL those hood hinges - two of them on the front odge of the hood - by the radiator. They sit there out of sight and mind, yet exposed to road spray and grit from the grille. They are hard to oil properly, and when (not if) they get stiff and seize they will tear themselves off the hood (and you won't notice this as you lift the heavy back edge of the hood)
