Synthetic Oil at 142k?? 200

Would i get any benefits from putting synthetic oil in my car now, or would it just cause some problems like leaking in worn gaskets? And if I did switch over, can I still use the same MANN oil filters, and which brand/wieght is the best.

    Synthetic Oil at 142k?? 200

There's gotta be an oil FAQ around here somewhere.

However, yes, the Mann filters are perfectly compatible with anything
    suitable for the crankcase.

Personally, I run Mobil 1, and I've got no idea how many miles are on my
car. I imagine about 100-140k miles. I'm noticing decreased oil loss
(the front seals leak) if anything. However, I am noticing a bit of
disturbing (probably) valve noise (I sure hope it's because my intake
manifold gasket is in need of replacement, and not excess wear).

    I think it's about $4.50-$5/qt for Mobil 1.

Would I bother on a non turbo red block engine? No. These engines will
last forever anyways, why waste $$ on em? OTOH the turbocharger itself is
a bit more delicate and could use all the help it can get.

Comments could be considered as biased, since I've been using and selling AMSOIL for over 25 years now.
The only benefits I can think of offhand are: better engine protection, cleaner engine inside, cooler running in heat, easier winter starts (if that is a thing in your area), possibly longer drain intervals (with the better synthetics), possibly better mileage.
I've change many, probably hundreds of cars to synthetic with over 100K on them, some with over 200K. Only ones that leaked either leaked before, or had been badly maintained.

You still have to pull the dipstick! It won't keep your headlights from burning out, or rocks from going through the windshield. Won't keep your kids from stopping pickups with the side of the car (ask me how I know!).

I strongly recommend using a good engine flush, such as made by AMSOIL or BG before you change. If you don't, or won't, watch for sudden increase in oil usage. If you see that after a couple of thousand miles, change the filter and top off. You may want to drain the first batch after 4-5,000 miles.

In my opinion, the best oil available is AMSOIL Series 2000 0W-30, which I run in all my cars. Next would be the 5W-30 or 10W-30, then Mobil 1 xW-30.

And, yes, you can certainly use the Mann filters.

In the differential, use 75W-90 gear lube (again, AMSOIL Series 2000 is better than the others, but Mobil makes a good one).

I started using Mobil 1 in my brick. The inside of the engine is looking cleaner. I run it for 10,000 miles with a Mann filter change at 5,000. Paul

Synthetic oil does not cause leaks. If your gaskets are that worn, it's time to change them anyway! I changed one car (non-Volvo) to synthetic oil at 160k, and the engine still runs strong with no oil leaks.

There are several oil studies about the "purity" and technical merits of 10w-30 vs 5w-50, 10w-40, or 20w-50. The "right oil" depends on your type of driving, weather conditions (mild vs extreme winters). For me, an average city/hwy driver with mild winters, Mobile-1 type 10w-30 is fine. Also, I can buy it almost anywhere in the USA.

REMEMBER: It's never too late to stop smoking, start eating right, and convert to synthetic engine oil!

I have 'late changed' a couple of my cars and like the stuff. Leaks? perhaps, but I experience no extras. I use Mann filters all the time. Benefits--will loosen dirt and deposits and run easier longer.

    Good luck,

Ok, when I go to AutoZone today to get the synthetic oil, which brand/grade is the best, and what price should I look for? I am also thinking about putting synthetic oil in the rear diff. also, so what should i use in that?

go to walmart for mobil 1 200

and pick up the convenience jugs. they are 5 quarts, which is plenty for your engine, and it'll cost about $18 for all 5 qts in the big jug, coming to about $3.60 for a quart instead of 4 something.

edit: holy crap, i just noticed how old this message is... why did this pop up in my browser... heh *sheepish grin* oops :)

I use Mobil l, but doubt if you go wrong with any of the synthetics. Weight: here in hot TX I use 15-50 in my turbos, but they are high milers. On my NA I am using a 10-40. Differential I haved been using a Castrol semi synthetic or blend. Tranies: I just can't swallow the high price for the synthetic, so I go to Sams and use their store brand and purge the trany every other year. Unless you get stupid with the AW, they really are tough, at least in my experience and there are a lot of good used units around.
