Anyone ever use an Amsoil Oil filter on their turbo? 700 1992

I tried to put one on last weekend while changing my oil and I could not wiggle it in there. It is longer than the Mann and interferes with what I believe is an oil cooler line coming off the block right in front of where the oil filter mounts. Luckily I had an extra Mann lying around. You can't get them around here, I have to order them.

Should fit just fine. SDF-42 right?

How are your motor mounts?

Nice fish Paul. Yes I have an SDF42 but I sure couldn't seem to get it on there. I'll check the motor mounts tonight although I don't see how that matters. The place where the filter mounts and the line that I'm having trouble with are both connected to the block so they won't move with respect to each other.

Hmmm, the weird thing is that the SDF-42 isn't of any magnitude larger than the Mann in OD. That line must be really close to the filter.

I do know that SDF-42's have fit on 92 740's in the past...wonder if the filter changed....

The OD is fine. The difference between the 42 and the Mann in OD is negligible. The problem was the length. The Amsoil filter is significantly longer than the somewhat stubby Mann filter.

The line is really close but I think that it is turbo specific because I think that its a coolant line. If I remember right, the block coolant drain is on this line. The owner's manual mentions the fact that only the turbo cars have an oil cooler and I surely haven't seen anything else on this car that I looks anything like an oil cooler to me.

Have been using them on my 245 for about 15 years now. Pain in the rear, so have switched to the SDF 57, which is a bit shorter and smaller in diameter.

Thanks Dick. I'll probably return mine for SDF57's then. Approximately how much shorter is the SDF57?

I was very close to being able to fit the 42 but I would have had to deform the hardline a little and then I'm not sure if the filter would have been resting on that line once it was installed. Neither of these options seemed attractive to me.

I asked Amsoil and the guy said that it should work and that they don't offer anything that would substitute even though I explained that the problem I was having was with the length of the filter.

Here are the measurements:
OD Hgt
SDF 57 2.920 3.496
SDF 42 3.720 3.966

Thread and gasket are the same. Pressure relief valve is the same.

Thanks Dick. That's a pretty big difference in OD, I wonder if it will restrict flow very much. The difference in height should be enough to allow it to easily fit though. Do you think I can still count on using it for the recommended change interval though, due to the reduction in size?

Well, the oil inlet and outlet holes are the same. There will be a bit less filter element, but unless you are using real junk oil and driving through constant sand storms, should last long enough. I only run my turbos for 10K on the AMSOIL, and (if I remember) try to change the filter after 5K--except for the 245 which has a bypass filter on it.

Good. I use Amsoil. I do live on a dirt road but its limerock so unless it hasn't really rained in weeks its never dusty and only then when following someone else.
Do you put 10K on the turbo cars in less than a year or do you change the oil every 10K or 1 year? I'm still trying to decide what change interval I should go with. This is only the second batch of Amsoil to go in the crankcase. I left the first in for about 6mos. and roughly 5K miles and I noticed a difference in the color of the visible valvetrain pieces when I took the oil filler cap off this time.

I just replaced mine for the second time today (Amsoil filter, that is). Do you have the correct one? SDF 42 is the size you need. I had no clearance problems at all, although you have the 92 turbo which is a little different than my 91 (but I still don't think there should be too much of a clearance problem).

Do you have a hardline coming off of your block to the rear of where the oil filter mounts? The line runs into the base of the oil filter mount. I believe this may be for cooling the oil?

It sounds like yours is set up differently than mine because it was immediately obvious to me that the filter was going to be a tight fit. I thought that I could get it on so I tried every angle I could to get that thing in there but No Go.

I guess this is just one more of the hidden changes that Volvo made between 91 and 92.
