DEXRON II/ATF QUESTION FOR SOMEONE...... 700 1991

What's difference between DEXRON II and DEX III/MERCON ATF's ? I'm assuming they can be mixed and either can be used in my 1991-740 auto. What did VOLVO put in cars from factory? Isn't DEX 2 or 3 an American product?ALSO- if synthetic ATF runs significantly lower temps(20 C lower) I was told ages ago that trans fluid is designed to operate within a designated range-HENCE the HAYDEN FLEX FAN that use to be so popular for towing/cooling needs-overcooled fluid and apparently there was problems with cooler fluid temps. The first question is the important one-I want to flush tommorrow A.M.-thanks mark

Use Synthetic, you will not regret it. (kinda rhymes?)

If you can buy off the shelf or wait and order it, Amsoil Universal ATF, this would be my first choice - it may just be the last trans. flush you will need in a very long time, if ever again. The stuff is incredible. I flushed three vehicle with it this year to date.

If you choose not to use the best, then buy Mobil 1 synth off the shelf.

If you wish, check out the trans flush steps provided by Amsoil on their website.

P.S. If you use the Amsoil you will notice an immediate and incredible difference. A thousand miles later it will be better yet.....it runs much cooler - heat is the enemy.

    DEXRON II/ATF QUESTION FOR SOMEONE...... 700 1991

This is reeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaalllllllllyyyyyy scary. I was in the local AutoZoneNapaPepBoys place last week and was asking myself the very same question regarding Dexron. Before I left the store, I priced out a flex fan vs. OEM replacement as my fan clutch is starting to act funny. I drive a 91 744, and my older brother's name was Mark.

    DEXRON II/ATF QUESTION FOR SOMEONE...... 700 1991

As related, Dexron III is upgraded, and backwardly compatible.
The synthetic will reduce wear, resist oxidation, last longer before needing replacement. Sure, it costs a few extra bucks up front, but have you priced a transmission lately?? No, running cooler isn't going to cause any problem in your Volvo.

    DEXRON II/ATF QUESTION FOR SOMEONE...... 700 1991

Wow, you AND the other respondent actually spelled Dexron without a "T" (i.e. DexTron).

I really am impressed. I can't figure out where people find a "T" in the word Dexron, but it always shows up.

That aside, if you're going to put synthetic in, flush with dino fluid first to get the garbage out. Drive a little bit, then drop in the synthetic. You'll have a REALLY clean trans.

    DEXRON II/ATF QUESTION FOR SOMEONE...... 700 1991

Dexron is a certification basically. So is Mercon.

Dexron II is older, and is now superceded by Dexron III. The /Mercon denotes that it also meets the Mercon standards.

It's like motor oil certifications. SAE comes out with a new one every now and then. I believe they're up to SJ or SL or something now. You can use the newer ones in older engines without a problem, but some of the newer engines can not use the older ones.

So to answer your question, you can use Dexron III/Mercon in your automatic transmission. I don't think they even sell Dexron II anywhere. It's been replaced.

Personally, I used Mobil 1 synthetic ATF when I did my flush about 2 months ago. It was really expensive though. (10-12 qts, eek)
