Noisy fuel pump saga continues. 200 1982

My main fuel pump got really noisy after installing a new in tank pump. Jerked out the main pump and replaced it with a junkyard pump, still noisy. Pulled the in tank pump, connections OK and polarity was the same position as the old pump (but no + marking on new pump), fuel hosefrom pump to dip tube, OK. Replaced the new in tank pump with a junkyard one and the noise is much better, not totally gone but more intermittently noisy instead of full time noisy.

My research has indicated 2 things might cure this. Bentley's shows a little fuel dampening device can be installed in the main pump pickup line, apparently this is a Volvo retrofit innovation to address noisy fuel pump issues. The latest IPD catalog also suggests using a post 86 pre pump with higher flow rate in high altitude or warm climate. I'm at 6500 ft so I think I qualify for high altitude.

Anyone tried either one of these solutions and how did they work? Which would you try? Pump+sock is $35/ damper is $50 at FCPGroton.

The higher flow rate pump sounds like a good idea. I haven't tried that. I just
wanted to recommend making sure you don't have the relay problems like Don Foster
points out. If the relay needs the circuit connections soldered the pump may be noisy. Also I recommend you clean the main fuse box to make sure you have the
smallest voltage drop across the fuses. Especially, fuse 5 and 7 because they
are for the fuel pumps on a turbo. Fuse 7 runs warm and should be changed every
    3-5 years in my experience.
