She won't shut down! 200 1983

OK, this has happened twice in the last two days (meaning it doesn't happen every time). If it matters (which I suspect it doesn't), we're talking about a 183 242 w/B21A and M46. Stop car, turn key to off position and engine doesn't shut down. Radio stops, but not engine. What's the deal? Ignition switch problem of sorts?

I am having the exact same problem on my '85 244T. Since it needs a new engine harness anyway, that is going to be my first line of attack.

I have also seen a replacement switch for the ignition, and plan to purchase one. Apparently there is an electronic switch on the back of it (towards the front of the car) in addition to the physical lock part.

In the mean time, I find letting the clutch out slowly in third gear is a bit more convenient than pulling the coil wire.

Do your dashboard lights stay on after you remove the key like mine sometimes do? The two problems seem to be related (at least for my car...)

No, actually, everything shuts off (lights, radio, etc.) and just the engine keeps running. Now that it has happened a few more times, it seems that mostly the engine will shut down if I just sit for a minute and let it run...the battery light flickers on/of, it stumbles a tiny bit, and then dies. Go figure. I guess it's engine wiring harness time for me, too.

Don't overlook the possibility of engine harness rot. Unless you tell me it has been replaced. BTDT exactly as you describe.

Sounds like your ignition key switch may be going bad. It may just be sticking inside. Try spraying either a graphite lock lubricant or WD-40 in it and see if that works. Mine had a problem with the buzzer being stuck on, this works.
Hopefully you won't need to replace it. It's not easy to replace either. You have to take apart both the dash and steering column. I've got an extra one with a key somewhere from an 84 260 Diesel wagon. I'm not sure if it will work on yours, you will have to check.
Ben
