Head core plug 1800

Hi,

Does anyone out there know if it is possible to replace the core plug on the rear of the cylinder head without removing the head from the block? Mine has just popped out and I would appreciate any input to avoid the hassle of dismantling the engine to replace ... or is it a case of just biting the bullet?

Head core plug 1800

Just discovered the previous core plug lodged in the darkest recesses of the engine bay. Some "wise" previous owner obviously had the same problem replacing this and had used EPOXY GLUE to hold it in place. Surprisingly it worked well enough for six years and several thousand miles!!!. Mystery solved, now down to the task of doing it by the book!. Cheers to all who responded.

I`ve used a device in the past just for this sort of problem. The device is a rubber plug with metal disks on each side. It has a small bolt in the middle that you tighten. They came in various sizes for most applications. Ask your parts jobber, they may know. Keith Prather, Ohio

I don't know how much clearance you have but it is certainly possible to
expand one using something like a bar clamp if you have enough space.
BTW I'm descended from MacKinnons and Boueys from North and South Uist.
Have dreams of visiting the auld sod one day.

Good on you, George!

At this very moment (actually, for many moments lately) I have a deep throat Jorgensen clamp draped over a B-18 to draw in the plug at the back of the head. The jaws extend about 6" from the clamp's beam or spine. ("Thingy," I suppose it would be called here.)

What I'd really like is a pair of extender for a (cheap) pipe clamp.

Mammoth at 8", and a good value at $30.

I just need 5 hands... and a fully-functional brain.

Find a woodworker? Good luck!
