1988 760Ti 265K Miles...... More often than not I get a loud ticking sound emanating from inside the dashboard behind instrument cluster.

It sounds like a clock ticking, but is not 1 tick per second.

For a while, I though it might be something coming through the speakers, or in sound system, but if I turn the volume all the way down the ticking remains.

It's quite perplexing and annoying.

My 89 760 makes a sound similar to what you describe. I guessed (but never confirmed) it was the baffels in the climate control system flaping back and forth (I have the ACC). I couldn't think of anything else back there that would make that noise.

It's not in the sound system but is realted to it somehow.... but it is not "in' the system. When it happens, with the volume completely off the ticking persists, but is not coming form the speakers, but from in the dash. Shut the power off the ticking stops. weird.

Does it make a clicking/ticking sound when the car is off? If it does then it would be the clock. My car makes a weird grinding/clicking sound every 3~4 seconds even when the car is off and I can only think that it is the clock in the dash - considering everything else should be powered down.

No. in fact I don't think it happens at all with the stereo turned _off_... instead of just all the way down....Hmmmmm, I'll have to chewck that out tonigh on the way home.

I have heard that sound and it isthe clock.... this is not it.
