Inline Transmission Filter 700 1991

I am almost due for a transmission fluid flush and thought I would try it myself this time. I have read the FAQs and posts and if I understand correctly, the AW 71 series transmissions have no filter, just a mesh screen to trap the big stuff.

That being said, has anybody ever tapped into the system and placed an inline transmission filter (similar to a remote oil filter) on their brick. If so, were the results worth the effort. Pix appreciated if there are any out there.

TIA

If you have a drain plug at the bottom of your pan, it makes more sense to just change the oil frequently. ATF is pretty cheap and it is really easy to drain it in the AW transmissions since they have a plug (unlike many domestic vehicles where you have to remove the whole pan). When I had a 240 with the AW in it, I would change my ATF every second oil change. If you were to install a filter, you would have to be concerned with its impact on the flow rate and the fluid pressure. Good luck!

I always use one in the trans cooler line, and, BTW, in the power steering return line.
I'm not sure how much it helps, but the p/s one cleared up a problem I was having on my '78 245, so I figured it must do something.
The ones I use are identical to the Magnefine brand, but only cost ~$US15 at CarQuest.

There are a half dozen or so magnets in the trans pan and inside the valve body. These along with the mesh screen are, imho, more than enough to keep the fluid reasonably clean between responsible flush intervals of once a year or every 20K miles.

I'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult to put an inline filter in place but I can't believe it would be worth the effort. The big problem with trans fluid is that it gets burnt (not dirty), something that a filter will not help with at all.
