Drained the block and radiator while still hot, could I have done any damage 200 1987

Like a dumbass, I drained the block and radiator after just shutting off the engine, not realizing that it might not be a good idea (duh) with everything being so hot. Could I have done any damage to the engine? Is this as bad as running it with no coolant? The temp gauge never got into the danger zone.

No problem draining when hot. Never add coolant to a hot engine unless it is running.

The possible damage would be (AFAIK) either a blown head gasket or a cracked block. Which means you will know pretty soon if everything is OK or not.

Erling.

as the others have said, as long as you didn't pour cold stuff in immediately.

me, i ran my engine for less 2 minutes when i did my drain. took me quite a while to do the drain too. that drain thing is slow.

No problem whatsoever as long as you don't refill it with cold stuff when the engine is hot.

No problem. I have done this for 14 times (every summer) on my 88 240DL. It should be fine if you do not pour ice water into radiator.

probably just fine ..... the problem is when you pour cold engine coolant into a hot engine........

As long as you did not immediately fill it with cold water, you are fine. This does not count the first degree burns you are no doubt treating.
