Fuel Pump testing procedure correct? B230F 200 1988

To test my fuel pump I removed the fuel pump relay and shorted the #30 and #87/2 contacts at the connector that the FPR plugs into with a paper clip. I turned the key to the on position. I did not hear the "whirring" sound I read I was supposed to hear, however the paper clip was warm. As a matter of fact, without doing this I think I used to hear a whirring sound when turning the key to the on position that I no longer hear. I'm checking this because of an intermittent stalling problem. Did I do the test correctly for my model? Will the car run if one or both of the pumps is bad or on it's way out? Thanks for any input.

Not sure of the numbers...I went big red wire to big yellow red wire, used wire and a switch. I can hear mine. The testing procedure is pretty clear in the Bentley's.

Did you check the relay? I can feel mine click when I start the car.

Chuck,

I've been having similar problems with my wagon and I am currently trouble shouting the non-start issue. When I read your post I decided togo out and see if I could feel the rely click when I truned the key to the on position. I didn't feel a click. I changed the relay this morning with a replacement this morning becuse I thought it was the source to my problem. What doyou suggest if my relay doesn't click and it is a replacement?

Yes, I could feel the relay click when I turned the key to the on position.
