needle almost to red... 200

How can you tell if you are overheating? I turned on my air condition yesterday, I noticed my temp. gauge ran up almost to the red. I turned off the air, but the needle stay at the same spot. I opened the hood, no smoke, water was not bubbling. This morning everything seems fine, do I have a problem coming? Thanks for your help...

You might also try cleaning the radiator fins by spraying water from the engine fan side to the front, ie back flush it. Also do this to the A/C condensor, but from the front. Clean all the bugs out first.

What year is your Volvo? About '85 or '86 ( I think) they started using a small circuit board called a "Temperature Compensating Board" as part of the temp guage circuit. This board plugs onto 4 pins on the instrument cluster board. With time and vibration the connections get loose or dirty and the temp guage starts acting up. Both my '88 and '86 have done this. The temp guage needle would run up to nearly the red and then sometimes come back down, and sometimes not read normal until the next time I ran the car. The next time the temp guage reads up near the red, try banging on the dash near the instrument cluster. If the needle drops down (slowly) the temp comp board is a prime suspect. If so, try a search of the archives for ways to fix this or see the Bentley manual. There's a way to bypass the temp comp board which I haven't tried yet.

Does your car have a AUX electric fan in the front?
check to see if it comes on when your AC is on. I also have a temp compensating board from my 1991 245se... working condition, will give it to you for free if yours is fried.

Yes Kevin, I do have a AUX electric fan in the front, but two fins are broken. Shall I fix that? I will appreciate your temp. compensating board if you can send it to me at P.O. Box 6615 Moraga, Calif. 94570. Thank you very much...
