1993 940 Turbo not shifting into overdrive always; and overdrive relay is working, please help!

Our 1993 940 Turbo is not always shifting from 3rd to 4th gear, and when it does, it has to be at high speeds. It appears to be more of a problem once the car has been driving for several minutes. We checked the overdrive relay and it appears to be brand new and working. Any other thoughts? Please help!

Our transmission is an AW71

Looks can be deceiving when it comes to the relay. Even though it clicks and looks good the solder joints on the board for the current carrying contacts can have almost invisible cracks. Resolder it, see FAQ section for details. If still no go flush the tansmission. I would try these 2 easy things before changing the solonoid.

I agree... I just figured the relay was good since they said it was slowly engaging overdrive, and not dropping out suddenly at highway speed. That's a hell of a wakeup call when that happens.

You're either low on fluid or some crud has worked its way into the TINY passages in the solenoid. It's usually filthy down there on the side of the transmission- if you choose to replace it yourself, CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN the underside. Use Gunk engine cleaner, lots of washing, a do-it-yourself car wash, whatever to clean it off, and follow it up with lots of brake cleaner or similar no-residue cleaner.

It's pretty simple other than that to change it out though it helps to have small hands. Electrical connector takes some patience to get apart thoguh it's just 1 pin.
