Key turns but no juice to starter 200 1987

My 240 ran fine earlier today, but now when you turn the key there is nothing except a click. Starter solenoid? I have been driving 240's for 25 years, but have never had a starter go bad or known anybody have one go bad. But I think it is not getting juice to the starter, so could it possibly be the ignition switch.

Do your horn and lights work normally? Do they dim when you crank the car? test for at least 8 volts at terminal 50 on the solenoid with key in start. You should have 12 volts at the b+ terminal 30. If the car is an automatic then try moving the gear shift while the key is in crank it may start in neutral. Good luck Dave.

Yeah, it's pretty rare but they can and do go bad. The good news is that you can almost ALWAYS find a good used one. If in fact it turns out that you need one.
Good luck!

Check your battery cables and clamps for corrosion at both the battery, the engine block, and the starter connections. What happens when you try to crank the engine with the headlamps on? If the lights dim or go out, check the battery charge and the cables and ground connections. If the lights do not dim it is probably the starter or solenoid. Try jumping 12 volts to the small wire connector plugged in on the starter solenoid. If the engine cranks now, your problem is in the ignition switch or reverse/neutral start switch on the auto trans shifter assembly. Because you are getting a ticking sound at the starter when you hit the ignition switch, chances are almost nil that the switch is bad. This should give you a few places to check. Good luck getting the brick running again!
