Fuel Gauge Not Working 200

I tried checking archieves, but couldn't find the answer. Car needed fuel so I filled up and gauge was reading below the red. 5 mins later it went to full, but shortly thereafter, read 1/2. Once the tank gets to 3/4 to half, gauge will fall to empty or below. I checked gauge connections and checked grounds on tail lights and engine compartment, but still not working right. Thoughts??

    Fuel Gauge Not Working 200

Fuel gauge and temp gauge are powered from the same voltage regulator ( 1987). The voltage regulator is the three pin IC that is on the back side of the instrument cluster, it is screwed to an aluminum heat sink. Elec path is; voltage regulator-gauge-quantity sensor-ground. Gauge can be tested with a 100 to 1000 ohm resister. Power gauge thru inst panel( three pin connector behind speedo ), tap gauge mount screw with resistor, resistor going to ground, if no reading tap other mount screw. Fuel gauge and temp gauge might be same basic p/n with a different face plate, gauge check can be varified thru temp gauge. You must be proficiant with a DVM to do this test. If gauge is good, trace wire to tank. Next check sensor at tank for ohm reading. Green book does not give ohm figures for sensor. Most likely it is an intermitant open in the wire or sensor in the tank. Regaurds.
